EU food exports in January reached a record level of 11.2 billion euros

The value of EU food exports products to the EU in January 2019 increased for the fourth year in a row and reached a new record level of 11.2 billion euros. Imports of agri-food products also rose to a record 10.8 billion euros, causing the monthly value of trade to exceed 22 billion euros, compared to 21 billion euros in January 2018.

These are the main results of the last monthly trade report published by the European Commission.

EU food exports

The largest increase in monthly export values ​​(January 2019 compared to January 2018) was recorded in the USA (191 million euros), China (an increase of 91 million euros), Switzerland (an increase of 39 million euros), the Philippines and Russia. (both increased by € 29 million).

In contrast, exports fell the most in Hong Kong (EUR 44 million), Turkey (EUR 29 million decreases), Angola (EUR 26 million decreases), Saudi Arabia (EUR 24 million) and Jordan (EUR 23 million decreases). 

By sectors, the largest growth in exports was achieved in the sector of alcoholic and liqueur products, wine and milk powder, by EUR 81 million, ie by EUR 68 million and EUR 58 million, respectively. Exports of sugar and cigarettes decreased by EUR 53 million and EUR 29 million, respectively.

In terms of imports, the value of agri-food products in the EU increased the most for products coming from the US (by EUR 291 million) and Ukraine (an increase of EUR 246 million).

Imports from Brazil (EUR 145 million), Indonesia (EUR 97 million) and Malaysia (a decrease of EUR 68 million) decreased the most.

In terms of the sector, imports of cereals other than wheat, rice and oilseeds increased the most, by EUR 170 million and EUR 134 million, respectively.
